Disney and Sky have joined hands to bring Disney+ streaming service to the United Kingdom and Ireland Sky customers. Both companies have struck a multi-year deal, which will benefit both companies obviously, but customers too will benefit from this deal.
Disney Plus is going to launch its channel on Sky Q platform, which will allow users to watch the channel along with Sky’s Now TV service in the upcoming months.
This is a popular video streaming service that was launched in the US in 2019, and it is making its way into the UK and Ireland in 2020, starting from March 24. Initially, the company has planned to launch the service in the 1st week of April, but then the launch date was shifted to a week earlier. With this multi-year deal between two giants, Sky Q customers will be able to enjoy Disney content at an affordable price of 5.99 pounds per month. Customers will be able to enjoy many amazing shows such as The Series and The World According to Jeff Goldblum, High School Musical: The Musical and The Mandalorian.
Those who are looking to get access to Disney Plus on Virgin Media and BT platforms need to wait because nothing has been told by the company whether a similar kind of deal will be made with these platforms. Moreover, Sky has not announced whether it is going to handle Disney Plus subscriptions with bundled billing, which it did with Netflix, as it made its way onto the platform in 2019.
It is also important to mention that some of the content available on Disney Plus is in HDR (High Dynamic Range) whereas Sky Q doesn’t support this video format. Talks were going on to bring HDR video to Sky in 2017, but then, the talks went into the cold basket. In December 2019, the talks for the HDR video support restarted again and will materialize later this year.
With a deal happening between Disney and Sky, Comcast-owned Sky also gets the opportunity to get the ‘first-pay window for 20th Century titles’, which means that the Sky Cinema customers can get access to the blockbusters from all the subsidiaries of Disney such as Terminator: Dark Fate, JoJo Rabbit and Le Mans ’66.
